How Long Do Overnight Oats Last in the Fridge?

The short answer

Overnight oats last 3 to 5 days in a sealed jar in the fridge, at 5°C or below. With fresh fruit stirred through, eat them within 3 days.

How long do overnight oats with fruit last?

Sealed and refrigerated, overnight oats keep for 3 to 5 days, and what is in the jar decides where you land. Our recipes have fresh fruit stirred through, so they are at their best within 3 days. A plain base of oats, milk, chia seeds, and yoghurt keeps up to 5.

Temperature matters as much as time. The Food Standards Agency recommends a fridge temperature between 0 and 5°C. If your fridge has a dial rather than a display, a cheap fridge thermometer settles it.

Rule of thumb

Fruit in the jar: eat within 3 days. Plain base: up to 5. Sealed lid either way, and judge by smell before you eat.

Overnight oats, day by day

Day What to expect
Days 1 and 2 At their best. Thick, creamy, and fully set.
Day 3 Still good. The texture softens and stirred-in fruit starts to tire. Last day for jars with fresh fruit.
Days 4 and 5 Plain base only. Stir well and judge by smell first.
Day 6 on No. The window has closed, so bin the jar.

How do you know if overnight oats have gone off?

  • A sour or yeasty smell. Fresh oats smell mild and milky.
  • A fizzy taste. That is fermentation, so stop eating.
  • Any mould, on the surface, the sides, or the lid.
  • Watery liquid that will not stir back in. A little surface liquid that stirs straight back through is normal.

Which ingredients can go in the night before?

The base is rarely the problem: the extras set the clock.

Ingredient How it holds up
Banana Sliced, it browns fast, so add slices fresh each morning. Mashed into the mix, it is fine for up to 3 days.
Mango Holds its colour. Fine from the start.
Berries Fine from the start. They tint the oats, which is cosmetic, not a safety issue.
Yoghurt, cream cheese Fine within the 3 to 5 day window.
Nuts, crunchy seeds, biscuit Go soft. Add them fresh for crunch.
Honey, syrup, spices No problem for the full window.

Can you leave overnight oats out overnight?

No. As a general food-safety rule, milky food should not sit at room temperature for more than about 2 hours. A jar forgotten on the side overnight has been warm for 8 hours or more. Bin it and make another: it takes 10 minutes.

The soak itself happens in the fridge too: mix the jar, seal it, and refrigerate straight away.

Can you freeze overnight oats?

Yes, for up to about 3 months. Tip the oats into a freezer container first: don't freeze the OATOLOGY jar.

  • Freeze the base only. Add fresh fruit after thawing.
  • Leave 2 to 3cm of space at the top. The mixture expands as it freezes.
  • Thaw overnight in the fridge, stir well, and loosen with a splash of milk.

How far ahead can you meal prep overnight oats?

Make 2 or 3 jars on a Sunday evening and the first half of the week is covered: fruit-stirred jars carry you to Wednesday, and a plain base stretches to Thursday or Friday. Add banana, nuts, and anything crunchy fresh each morning. Mango and Coconut is our favourite meal-prep jar, because the mango still looks like mango on day 3.

Your questions

Can you eat overnight oats after 5 days?

No. 5 days is the outer edge, and only for a plain base with no fresh fruit. After that, bin the jar, even if it smells fine.

Do overnight oats need to be airtight?

They keep best with an airtight lid. A sealed jar holds them fresh for the full 3 to 5 days, stops fridge smells getting in, and travels without leaking. A loosely covered bowl works for one night, but the top dries out and the window shortens.
