Kitchen tip
No jar with a milk line? Measure 150ml of milk in a jug and weigh 50g of rolled oats on kitchen scales. Our overnight oats jar has both measures built in.
- Add one slightly heaped lid of rolled oats (about 50g): fill the upside-down steel lid and tip it in.
- Add 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt, 1 to 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup, ½ tsp vanilla, 1 tsp lemon zest, and a pinch of salt.
Kitchen tip
Grate the zest before you cut the lemon, not after. Zesting a squeezed half is a thankless job.
- Add a handful of blueberries, keeping a few back for the top, and stir right to the bottom.
- Seal the jar and put it straight in the fridge overnight.
- In the morning, top with the blueberries you kept back and a little extra zest. Too thick? Stir in a splash of milk.

How long do blueberry and lemon overnight oats last in the fridge?
Up to 3 days in a sealed jar in the fridge, kept at 5°C or below. Blueberries hold their shape well, so they can chill in the jar from the start. Add the reserved blueberries and extra zest fresh each morning.
Can you use frozen blueberries in overnight oats?
Yes. Stir them in still frozen: they thaw in the fridge overnight while the oats set, releasing their juice and tinting everything a gentle purple. No need to defrost first, and it makes this a year-round jar.
Can you make blueberry and lemon overnight oats vegan?
Yes. As written they use Greek yoghurt and honey, so use a plant yoghurt, maple syrup instead of honey, and any plant milk to the same 150ml line. The overnight set stays the same.
Should you use lemon zest or lemon juice in overnight oats?
Zest. The 1 tsp of zest carries the bright lemon oils without adding acid, so the milk and yoghurt stay smooth. A squeeze of juice can curdle dairy and thin the set, so add it on top in the morning if you want it sharper.
How many calories are in blueberry and lemon overnight oats?
Our estimate is about 430 kcal a jar, made as written with semi-skimmed milk, 1 tbsp honey, and a handful of blueberries. Your choice of milk and sweetener moves it up or down.
