Chocolate and raspberry overnight oats in an OATOLOGY jar, topped with fresh raspberries and dark chocolate, beside a second jar and the steel lid filled with oats

Ingredients

Makes 1 jar

In the jar tonight

  • Milk to the line on your jar150ml, any milk
  • 1 slightly heaped lid of rolled oatsabout 50g
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt
  • 1 tbsp raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrupto taste
  • A pinch of sea salt

On top in the morning

  • A handful of raspberriesfresh, or frozen and thawed
  • A sprinkle of dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate

Method

  1. Pour milk into the empty jar, up to the line on the back (150ml).
    Kitchen tip

No jar with a milk line? Measure 150ml of milk in a jug and weigh 50g of rolled oats on kitchen scales. Our overnight oats jar has both measures built in.

  2. Add one slightly heaped lid of rolled oats (about 50g): fill the upside-down steel lid and tip it in.
  3. Add 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt, 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder, 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. Stir right to the bottom until no dry cocoa is left.
    Kitchen tip

Cacao and cocoa powder are interchangeable here, so use whichever is in the cupboard.

  4. Seal the jar and put it straight in the fridge overnight.
    Kitchen tip

For a pink ripple, stir a few frozen raspberries in tonight: their juice runs through the oats as they thaw. Keep fresh ones for the top.

  5. In the morning, give it a stir and top with a handful of raspberries and a sprinkle of dark chocolate. Too thick? Stir in a splash of milk.

Make it your way

Protein powder

Stir in a small scoop of chocolate protein powder, or an extra spoon of Greek yoghurt, with a splash more milk.

No chia seeds

Leave them out and stop a little under the line, at about 130ml. It still sets, a little less thick.

Feeling indulgent

A spoon of hazelnut butter or a few extra chocolate chips tips it fully into dessert.

Your questions

What is the difference between cacao and cocoa powder?

Both are ground cocoa beans, so use whichever you have. Raw cacao is cold-processed and slightly more bitter; cocoa powder is roasted and mellower. Use 1 tbsp of either, and skip drinking chocolate powder, which is already sweetened.

Can you use frozen raspberries in overnight oats?

Yes. Frozen raspberries thaw in the jar overnight and their juice bleeds into the oats, for a rippled, deep pink jar. Fresh ones hold their shape and look brighter on top. For the best of both, stir a few frozen berries in tonight and save fresh ones for the morning.

Can you make chocolate and raspberry overnight oats vegan?

Yes, with a few swaps. As written they use Greek yoghurt and honey, so use a plant yoghurt (coconut or soya both work) and maple syrup instead. Choose a dairy-free dark chocolate for the top and any plant milk for the 150ml.

How long do chocolate and raspberry overnight oats last in the fridge?

Up to 3 days in a sealed jar in the fridge, kept at 5°C or below. The cacao flavour deepens by day 2. Add the raspberries and chocolate fresh each morning rather than storing them on top.

How many calories are in chocolate and raspberry overnight oats?

Our estimate is about 440 kcal a jar, made as written with semi-skimmed milk, honey, and a handful of raspberries, before the chocolate on top. Your choice of milk, sweetener, and toppings moves it up or down.
